Birmingham is the closest major airport to Coventry, which is both the reason most people use it and the reason they underestimate it. Ten miles sounds like nothing. It is nothing, right up until the morning you leave at the wrong time, sit on the A45 behind an incident, and watch your check-in window close.

How long the journey really takes

We measured this route ourselves on 1 August 2026 using traffic-aware routing at five different departure times, rather than quoting a single average that is wrong at both ends of the day.

The spread is narrower than most people expect. Seventeen minutes at 4am against twenty at the afternoon peak means this route is unusually predictable, because the bulk of it is dual carriageway and motorway rather than town driving. That is exactly why it is worth pre-booking. The variable on this journey is almost never the traffic. It is whether the car turns up.

Note how the times stretch further apart the further south you start. Leamington and Whitnash swing by ten minutes or more between a quiet hour and the afternoon peak, because those routes feed through more junction traffic before they reach the motorway. If you are travelling from that end of the county in the late afternoon, build the extra in.

Working out what time to leave

The airport asks you to arrive two hours before a short-haul departure and three before long-haul. Working backwards from a 7am short-haul flight out of Coventry, that means being at the terminal by 5am, and leaving home around 4:30am to give yourself a margin on a journey that takes under twenty minutes.

People routinely cut that finer and are usually fine. The reason we do not recommend it is that the cost of being wrong is asymmetric. Arriving twenty minutes early costs you twenty minutes. Arriving ten minutes late can cost you the flight, the hotel and the first day of the holiday.

Where you actually get dropped off

Birmingham runs a single passenger terminal, so there is no terminal guessing game of the kind you get at Heathrow or Manchester. Everyone goes to the same place.

There are two ways in. Premium Set Down sits directly outside the terminal building, so you step out of the car and walk straight in. At the time of writing the airport charges £7 for the first 15 minutes there. The alternative is the Drop Off Car Park about 400 metres out, free for the first 10 minutes, connected by a dedicated footpath and a five to ten minute walk to check-in.

Why not just park, or use an app

Parking at the airport works fine for a two-night trip and stops making sense somewhere around the end of the first week, once the daily rate has quietly overtaken two transfers. It also means someone drives home at 6am and drives back at midnight ten days later.

Ride-hailing apps work well enough for the outbound leg in daylight. The problems show up at the two moments this journey depends on: a 4am pickup, when driver supply is thinnest and cancellations are most common, and a delayed arrival, when the price you were shown is not the price you end up paying.
